about

Sub Chakra co-founder and Calgary native, Metafloor makes his return to Aufect after his much lauded release on Platinum. This time around he brings us a comprehensive selection of his most recent works, in the form of Cosmic Medley, Aufect’s second-ever artist long-player. A deft balance of dub-tinged Jungle, Dubstep and Drum & Bass cuts that showcase the diversity and skill of this talented producer.

This LP builds upon Metafloor’s already successful framework of combining innovative beats with massive basslines, experimental percussion and a rich, textural palette. The album also features the vocal talents of Cardiff-based, “Pidgin Rap” phenom, Magugu and a collaboration with the impressive young producer, EvoluShawn. There’s something here for fans of underground Bass Music of all stripes.

The soothing, dark vibes of “MTV”, prepare for what is to ensue in a cloying fashion. “Junior Bevel” gets things warmed up with a tough 140 bpm beat and cheeky brass stabs. “Soloman” strips things back into classic dub-infused Dubstep territory and lets the spacious texture and deep subs do the talking. “Flex” keeps the Dubstep train rolling with a punishing sub modulating through all the right frequencies to reverberate your chestplate. EvoluShawn and Metafloor team up on the cheeky slapper, “Austin Dub”, which employs the namesake’s comedy to get a rise out of us with a catchy mid-bass and flute hook. Magugu’s impressive vocals grace the rowdy Halftime anthem, “Don Don”, keeping things lively with flairs of Jungle percussion and layers of FX. “WTF” exudes the type of swagger Metafloor is known for, with an expertly manipulated vocal sample, runnin’ Halftime D&B beat, and a clean, weighty sub. ”Don’t Call Me Crazy” is a unique beast, sporting a tough, staccato beat and scathing bassline, sounding like Dubstep at 160 bpm. “Dead Deaf” is a Halftime Jungle number that focuses on creating an almost vacuumous amount of space so the textures and clean sub bass can shine. “Make It Thump” is certainly a polished modern example of 808-driven Halftime, but something about it feels familiar like an old favourite record from yore. Both weird and exhilarating in equal parts. “Timeless” is a Drum & Bass tune that manages to delicately balance it’s bi-polar nature of jump-esque, descending synth stabs, and melodic chords stabs, that evolves into a full-blown maximal synth bed. Finally, the album’s title cut “Cosmic Medley” is a haunting but optimistic, Autonomic gem. A perfect blend of melodies between the various layered vocals, Eno-esque synths and textures, sitting cozily on top on the understated, but meaningful beat, punctuated with 80s toms. It brings us back to a simpler time and full circle on the journey of this LP.
